According to Public Relations: A Values-Driven Approach, propaganda is a systematic effort to disseminate information, some of which may be inaccurate or incomplete, in an attempt to influence public opinion. Webster's Dictionary says that propaganda is intended to help or oppose a cause. Throughout history, propaganda has been associated with the public relations field. Choose any war in our country's history and you will notice that propaganda played a significant role by helping the public decide for or against the war. In my opinion, propaganda is similar to spin. Both spin and propaganda are very selfish and one-sided which may be the reason why propaganda has been discredited in the past. Like spin, propaganda does not always have to be the complete truth. If the message being disseminated is not the entire truth, how can the public be expected to make good decisions?
